THERMORY · OUTDOOR BARREL SAUNA KITS

Thermory Barrel Sauna

Two, four or six of you, wrapped in heat-treated Nordic spruce. Fourteen models, one build. Choose the size, the porch and the view.

Our 3D render of the Thermory No. 60 barrel sauna in natural thermo-spruce, front three-quarter view on a white background, a covered porch in front of the glass door with a slatted porch bench on each side, black roof cover over the upper staves, three stainless bands and three cradles

Thermory barrel saunas are outdoor sauna kits made in Estonia from 1.57 in thermally modified Nordic spruce. The Cozy barrels (No. 50 to No. 55) are 76.4 in across and 80.3 in tall outside, in three lengths for two, four or six people. The Large barrels (No. 60 to No. 63) are 90.2 in across and 93.7 in tall, 89.6 in long with the end trim: the No. 62 and No. 63 seat six, the No. 60 and No. 61 seat four behind a 19.3 in covered porch. Even numbers have a half-moon rear window, odd numbers a solid rear wall, and the No. 52, 54, 60 and 62 also come in black Ignite. Every kit has a glass door, two benches with backrests, a flat duckboard floor and a PVC roof cover. Thermory covers the barrel for two years from delivery. Sauna Marketplace sells each with its own heater packages, lights and, on the Large barrels, a two-tier bench kit.

WILL IT FIT

Three cradles. One level, dry pad.

Every barrel rests on wooden cradles 59.1 in wide, set 6.9 in in from each end: three under most models, two under the No. 54 and No. 55. Outside, a Cozy barrel is 77.5 in wide and 80.3 in tall, in lengths of 60.2, 73.9 or 89.6 in. A Large barrel is 91.3 in wide, 93.7 in tall and 89.6 in long.

Thermory asks for a site that is level, firm and free of standing water after rain, with concrete, pavers or crushed stone preferred. Keep the cradles off the soil with a water-resistant layer, such as bitumen strips, underneath them: Thermory’s warranty does not cover a barrel set directly on gravel, grass or mud. If the pad settles, the door can stop closing properly.

Leave room to walk all the way around. The staves go on from both sides and the steel bands wrap the whole barrel.

WHICH BARREL

Cozy or Large. Porch or not.

The Cozy barrels, No. 50 to No. 55, are 76.4 in across outside, with 69.7 in from the floor to the top of the room. The Large barrels, No. 60 to No. 63, are 90.2 in across with 82.7 in of height inside: room to stand tall, and room for the two-tier bench add-on.

Cozy comes in three lengths. The No. 54 and No. 55 seat two on 47.6 in benches, the No. 52 and No. 53 seat four on 60.5 in benches, and the No. 50 and No. 51 seat six on 77.2 in benches.

The Large body is the same 88 in of staves either way. The No. 62 and No. 63 give all of it to the room, six people on 76.3 in benches. The No. 60 and No. 61 set the front wall back 19.3 in for a covered porch with two small benches, and seat four inside on 61.4 in benches.

Thermory’s room volumes run from 124.3 cu ft in the No. 54 and No. 55 to 265 cu ft in the No. 62 and No. 63.

THE BUILD

Two people. Tools you likely own.

Thermory recommends two people. The list: tape measure, pencil, level, rubber mallet, hammer, stapler, utility knife, cordless drill with bits from 5/32 to 25/64 in, nail gun, hex keys, a wrench for the band bolts, a vise, gloves and safety glasses.

You square and level the cradles, set the center stave on the cradle dowels, then work the staves up both sides with the mallet, seating the front and rear walls in their grooves as you go. Two H staves and thin filler strips close the top. Steel bands pull everything tight. Then you cut the door opening out of the front wall with the hand saw in the kit and fit the door, benches, floor, roof cover and trim.

Owners who reviewed it on our store finished in six hours to a day with two people.

Count the parts against the parts list before you start. Thermory’s warranty asks you to inspect the kit before assembly.

INSIDE

Two long benches. A floor that stays flat.

Two benches face each other down the length of the room, each with a three-board backrest and a center leg. Cozy benches are 19.3 in deep, 20.3 in off the floor. Large benches are 22.1 in deep, 19.7 in off the floor.

A duckboard floor in two sections sits flat between them, so you never stand on the curve.

Even-numbered models have a half-moon window in the rear wall, about 7 by 3.5 ft in the Large barrels and 5.8 by 3 ft in the Cozy (Thermory’s figures). Odd numbers keep a solid wood wall for privacy. Every model has a glass door.

For the Large barrels, the store sells Thermory’s two-tier bench kit as an add-on: an upper seat 31.9 in above the floor, with a step 14.6 in up.

THE HEATER

Your heater, from the listing’s packages.

No heater comes in the crate. Each store listing has its own packages. For the Cozy 50 series: HUUM DROP, Harvia KIP Black or Harvia Spirit. For the 60 series: HUUM HIVE Mini, Harvia Virta or Saunum AIR Perfect. For Ignite: Harvia KIP or HUUM DROP, with a Saunum AIR package quoted on request.

Mount the heater as low as its manual allows, which spreads the heat best, and keep every clearance that manual gives.

An electric heater needs a 240 V line and an electrician, who supplies the high-voltage wire; the controller comes with its own low-voltage cable. Lights work best on their own 120 V circuit.

Thermory caps the room at 194°F.

WHY IT LASTS

Spruce, heat-treated to shrug off rot.

Thermory modifies Nordic spruce with heat and steam alone. In Thermory’s fungus tests the spruce reached Class 1 rot resistance, which Thermory rates at 25 years or more outdoors with minimal upkeep.

A keystone stave at the bottom and another at the top let the stave joints shed water, and the waterproof PVC roof cover staples down over the top.

Thermory covers the barrel for two years from delivery against construction, manufacturing and material defects, and against exterior rot that would make it unusable, as long as it sits on a proper base and gets the yearly care in Thermory’s maintenance guide. We trust this wood at home: a cofounder still owns the first Thermory Square sent to North America.

Finishes

  • Natural Thermo-Spruce: Thermory’s heat-treated spruce in its own warm brown, inside and out. Left bare outside it weathers to silver; a penetrating UV oil keeps the brown.
  • Ignite black: The look of charred wood, made without a flame, so there is no soot to rub off. It is black outside only: staves, end walls, trim and cradles. The room inside stays natural spruce. Offered on the No. 52, No. 54, No. 60 and No. 62.

Care and warranty

  • Throw water on the stones only, never on the walls or benches, and skip wet swimwear on the benches.
  • After a session, wipe the benches with a damp cloth and let the room dry. Thermory suggests running the heater for half an hour with the vent open and the door closed.
  • Once a year, clean the benches, walls and ceiling with a sauna cleaner and treat the wood with a sauna-safe product. Sand out deep stains with fine paper first, and check the bench screws.
  • Brush snow off the roof cover in winter, gently, so you do not tear it.
  • Outside, the spruce weathers to silver. A penetrating UV oil keeps its brown.
  • Never pressure-wash it or dry clothes inside, and keep the room under 194°F.

Questions

Which Thermory barrel should I choose?

Start with how many people and how tall they are. The Cozy barrels (No. 50 to No. 55) are 76.4 in across with 69.7 in of height inside and seat two, four or six. The Large barrels (No. 60 to No. 63) are 90.2 in across with 82.7 in inside, seat four with a porch or six without, and take the two-tier bench kit.

What is the difference between the No. 60 and the No. 62?

Same Large barrel, used two ways. The No. 60 sets the front wall back 19.3 in for a covered porch with two small benches and seats four inside on 61.4 in benches. The No. 62 has no porch and seats six on 76.3 in benches. Thermory gives the rooms as 212 and 265 cu ft.

What do the even and odd model numbers mean?

Even numbers have a half-moon window in the rear wall; odd numbers have a solid wood rear wall. So the No. 60 is the porch barrel with the window and the No. 61 is the same barrel with a private back.

What foundation does a Thermory barrel need?

A level, firm site that drains, with concrete, pavers or crushed stone preferred. The cradles should not touch the soil: Thermory suggests a water-resistant layer such as bitumen strips under them, and its warranty does not cover a barrel set directly on gravel, grass or mud. A pad that settles can leave the door sticking.

How long does it take to build?

Thermory recommends two people. Owners who reviewed it on our store finished in six hours to a day. Check every part against the parts list before you start.

Does it come with a roof?

Yes. Every kit has a waterproof PVC roof cover that staples over the top staves, with wood slats along its lower edges and trim boards at each end. Brush heavy snow off it gently in winter.

Which heater goes with it, and do I need an electrician?

Each listing has its own heater packages: HUUM DROP, Harvia KIP Black or Harvia Spirit for the Cozy 50 series; HUUM HIVE Mini, Harvia Virta or Saunum AIR Perfect for the 60 series; Harvia KIP or HUUM DROP for Ignite. Every electric heater needs a 240 V line run by an electrician.

Is the Ignite black inside too?

No. Ignite is black outside only: staves, end walls, trim and cradles. The door frame, benches and the room itself stay natural spruce. It comes as the No. 52, No. 54, No. 60 and No. 62, all with the rear window.

Can I add the two-tier benches?

In the Large barrels, yes. The 60 series listing sells Thermory’s two-tier bench kit for the No. 60 and No. 61 or the No. 62 and No. 63, and the Ignite listing sells a raised bench system for its No. 60 and No. 62. The upper seat sits 31.9 in above the floor with a step 14.6 in up.

Does the wood need stain or sealer?

Not to last: the modified spruce resists rot on its own. Outside it weathers to silver, and a penetrating UV oil keeps its brown if you prefer that. Inside, treat the wood once a year with a product made for saunas.

How is it delivered?

In a crate by LTL freight, to the curb with a lift gate. The carrier does not move it to your site, so plan to offload it yourself. Freight is added at checkout.

What does the warranty cover?

Thermory covers the barrel for two years from delivery, for the first buyer, against construction, manufacturing and material defects and exterior rot that would make it unusable. The glass door and window, lights and heaters are not covered by it, nor is a barrel set directly on gravel, grass or mud, or a kit stored unbuilt for more than a year. Rental saunas need Thermory’s agreement. Follow the maintenance guide, and report any problem within 10 days of finding it.
