The open stainless basket releases heat straight through its sides, keeping more warmth low in the room where you sit. It still does what Saunum is famous for - blending hot ceiling air with oxygen-rich floor air - but with 130 lb of visible stone and a more intense, rock-forward heat. With an exposed stone basket the heat and steam radiate out the sides and settle into the lower half of the room, instead of tunneling straight up and pooling at the ceiling the way a closed/solid body does. It is the same trade you get with any open-basket heater - more warmth where your body actually is - and on a Saunum the air-blending fan reinforces it.
The open basket carries 20 lb more stone than the closed body. That thermal mass is the Saunum thesis: big stone volume makes long, soft loyly like the Estonian smoke saunas that inspired designer Andrus Vare.
A quiet three-speed fan pulls the hottest ceiling air down the telescopic column, mixes it with cooler floor-level air, and returns it evenly - Saunologia measured the head-to-toe spread cut in half in long-term testing.
Because the stones are exposed, the Dec 2025 manual asks for 6" side and front clearance to combustibles (vs 2" for the closed black body). SaunaDesignPro’s 3D planner enforces the right envelope automatically.
