ELECTRIC SAUNA HEATERS

Electric sauna heaters: every electric heater, sized to your room.

Pick by room volume and the circuit you have. Then by where it hangs, how you run it and the heat you like.

Electric sauna heaters in 3D

Each card opens the heater’s SaunaDesignPro page with its 3D model. Heaters not yet modeled are at Sauna Marketplace: every listing.

Planning pages for heaters sold outside the US: HUUM CORE Wall, HUUM CORE Wall Combi, HUUM CORE Wall Mini, HUUM CORE Wall Mini Combi.

Every electric heater on the numbers that decide.

Ratings follow the matching variants and electrical connections. Room volume includes each manufacturer’s glass allowance.

Six things to settle before you choose.

Short answers to what decides an electric heater, each from the manuals printed on SDP’s heater planning pages.

Size it on the room, then add for glass

Multiply width by depth by ceiling height: a 6 by 7 ft room with a 7 ft ceiling is 294 cu ft. Each heater is rated for a range of room volume, and the room has to land inside it.

Glass, tile and stone soak up heat, so makers add to the volume for them. Harvia adds 3.94 cu ft for every square foot, HUUM 3.3 and Saunum 3.0. A 24 by 80 in glass door is 13.3 sq ft, so that room counts as about 347 cu ft for a Harvia. The sizer at the top of this page does the sum for each maker.

The circuit decides as much as the room

Most electric sauna heaters in US homes run on a hard-wired 240 V single-phase circuit, installed by an electrician. Many commercial buildings have 208 V three phase, and a heater rated at 240 V puts out less on 208 V: HUUM lists its 4.5 kW DROP at 3.4 kW there.

Small rooms have a smaller option: Harvia’s Vega Compact comes in 120 V and 240 V versions, both hard-wired. Each planning page prints the voltage, phase and output of every size.

Controls on the heater, or on the wall

Some heaters carry their own timer and thermostat knobs: the Harvia KIP with built-in controls, the Vega Compact and The Wall. You set them inside the sauna. The standard KIP and the Cilindro are sold either way.

Most others need a separate controller mounted outside the hot room: a HUUM UKU for HUUM heaters, a Harvia Xenio or Fenix for the Spirit, Virta and Club. Saunum ships its AirIQ Wi-Fi controller in the box with every AIR heater.

Wall-mounted or floor-standing

A wall heater keeps the floor clear, which matters most in a small room: the HUUM DROP, Harvia KIP and Spirit and Saunum AIR all hang on the wall.

Floor-standing heaters can carry far more stone. The HUUM HIVE holds 528 lb and the HUUM STEEL 330 lb, against 44 lb in a Harvia KIP. Under-bench heaters like the EOS Invisio Midi hide below the benches inside a vented shaft the manual specifies.

Ceiling height and clearances

Every heater has a lowest finished ceiling it allows: 73 in for the Saunum AIR, 75 in for the HUUM DROP and Harvia KIP, 80 in for the HUUM CORE. The card for each heater shows it.

Each also keeps set distances to walls, benches and the ceiling. The designer places the heater in your room in 3D and flags a clearance the manual does not allow.

Air blending and built-in steam

Saunum’s AIR heaters have a quiet fan that pulls the hottest air down from the ceiling and mixes it with cooler air from near the floor, so the heat evens out from head to feet.

A combi heater adds steam on its own: the Harvia Virta Combi has a built-in 2 kW steamer with its own water reservoir. Its manual asks for a humidity sensor, a cold-water shutoff and a floor drain.

Questions about electric sauna heaters

How many kW does my sauna need?

Pick by room volume rather than kW: each heater lists the room volume each size is rated for. Add the maker’s glass allowance to your room first. Enter your room in the sizer at the top of this page and the cards show only heaters that fit.

Which electric heaters work on 208 V three phase?

Choose the 208 V three-phase chip above. The HUUM DROP, CORE, CLIFF, STEEL, HIVE and HIVE Mini, the Harvia KIP, Cilindro, Club and Virta families and the EOS heaters list 208 V sizes. Output drops on 208 V, so read the size table on the heater’s page.

Which heaters have the controls on the heater?

The Harvia KIP with built-in controls, the Vega Compact and The Wall. The standard KIP is sold either way. Every other heater here uses a wall controller outside the hot room.

Can I plug a sauna heater into a wall outlet?

No. These heaters are hard-wired by an electrician. Even the 120 V Harvia Vega Compact is hard-wired.
